Kwara Gov Kicks Against Retrenchment in LGs

Date: 2012-10-26

Kwara State governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has directed all the 17 local government councils in the state not to retrench any worker in any of the local government council in the state.

Community News gathered that the governor's directive came on the backdrop of biometric data and verification exercise by the government on council workers, with attendant apprehension of imminent sack among workers.

A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Isiaka Gold, which was made available to Community News in Ilorin, advised all local government chairmen in the state to pay all outstanding salaries and overheads, including that of October, to all local government workers with immediate effect.

"In line with the above directive, the state government has also directed the immediate release of N555, 200, 000 to the accounts of the local government councils from their excess crude account to enable them settle all outstanding salary arrears and other overhead costs," he said.

The SSG also said that henceforth, no local government should accumulate salary arrears under any guise, adding that government would continue to ensure that all local government councils retain the capacity to meet their obligations including the prompt payment of staff salaries.

It is recalled that the NULGE in the state had issued a threat to embark on indefinite strike action over non-payment of council workers' salaries to protest the delay in payment of salaries, among other issues.
