National Assembly Wrong on Tenure of Registrars, Bursars - Oloyede

Date: 2012-10-16

The out-gone Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Ish'aq Oloyede, on Monday said the National Assembly was wrongly advised to recommend a five-year single term for Registrars and Bursars of federal universities.

Oloyede spoke in Ilorin at a pre-convocation press conference held at the institution's campus.

He said that unlike the academics, registrars and bursars would find it difficult to work in their departments after the completion of their term in office.

"The National Assembly made a mistake with the five- year single term for registrars and bursars in the nation's universities.

"The Vice-Chancellor, as an academic, can go back to the classroom and still be respected, but for the registrar and bursar to go back to his department is not the best.

"I will say that the old practice of no fixed tenure be maintained or at most, it should be extended to two terms," he said.

He, however, said that a five-year single term was desirable for Vice-Chancellors.

Oloyede disclosed that the university would graduate 5, 556 undergraduate students and 1,069 post- graduate students.

The vice chancellor, whose tenure expired on Monday, used the occasion to formally hand over to his successor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali.

Ambali, in his remarks, promised to sustain the uninterrupted academic calendar of the institution.

He said that concerted efforts would be made to improve on the performance of his predecessor.
