University of Ilorin graduates 12,009 students, 130 bag first class

A total of 130 grandaunts of the University of Ilorin have graduated with a first class degree, for the 2018/2019 academic year.

This was disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem at the convocation press conference heralding the activities for the 35th convocation ceremony of the University.

Age while giving the statistics of the graduating students said "we'll be convoking a total of 12,009 students, out of this are 10,299 first degree and diploma graduands while the remaining 1,710 are graduating with higher degrees/postgraduate diploma.

"We have 130 first class, 2902 second class upper division, 5661 second class lower division, 1,392 third class and 31 pass.

"We also have 76 MBBS grandaunts, 48 grandaunts in Nursing, 33 grandaunts in Pharmacy and 16 in Veterinary medicine" he stressed.

Giving further breakdown, the Vice-Chancellor said "the Faculty of Agriculture have 30 first class students which was the highest, while closely followed by Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences and Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences who produced 21, 17, 14 and 11 first class grandaunts respectively.

The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the university has made nineteen major research discoveries within a year.

Among such recoveries according to him, are development of a speed breaker device by Taiwo Ajiboye et al.; invention of an anti-electricity power theft device by Dr. Akorede from the Department of Electrical/Electronics; innovation of an oil spillage management product by my humble self, which has been patented and commercialised; fabrication of a machine capable of producing different shapes of pencil in commercial quantities by Dr. Ajimotokan from the Department of Mechanical Engineering; and discovery that could be developed further as a potential treatment or cure for Tuberculous by Mistura Lawal-Arowona, one of our PhD. students in the Department of Chemistry among others.

Professor Age said, more interestingly, the institutions health experts led by Professor Munirudeen Ijaiya in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology developed a new VVF treatment in the late 2018 which he described as a breakthrough, which is a further revalidation of what the university stand for and the height the institution aspire to reach.
