Flood displaces 7,000 in two Kwara LGs
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has said that flood has displaced about 7,000 people in Patigi and Edu local government areas of the state.
According to a statement on Friday by Ahmed's Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, the governor said that the flood submerged about N100m worth of farm crops in Patigi.
He stated that the flood wrecked havoc in about 70 communities of Patigi.
The communities include Maulogi, Gbafu, Vuma, Esungi, Kpatatakpan, Babogi, Gonji-Saaci, Gbaradogi, Kpta-the Regatta village, Dzaka, Esun-Dari and Chenu.
He added that residents of 16 communities were rendered completely homeless.
Ahmed spoke during a visit to the affected communities. He called on the Federal Government to urgently come to the aid of the victims.
Ahmed was represented by his Special Adviser on Emergency and Relief Services, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, who led the government team.
He promised that the state government, within its available resources, would provide relief materials to the victims. One of the chairmen of the affected local government areas, Alhaji Taoheed Lata, described the flood as a great disaster.
"The flood calls for a sober reflection. It is a great loss to the nation. Almost 70 communities have been submerged; residential, worship houses and school buildings have been pulled down," Lata said.
Village head of Gbaradogi, Alhaji Mohammed Shaaba, called on the government to provide shelter for the affected people.
He said that was the only way the communities along river banks could be relieved from the effect of the flood.
The government delegation also visited Gunji Sacci, the temporary relief camp of the displaced people.
Managing Director of the Lower Niger Basin Development, Ilorin, Kwara State, Mr. Abdubakar Aduragba, had said on Wednesday that the flood submerged more than 3,200 hectares of rice plantation.
The plantation is under the Tada-Shonga Irrigation Scheme.
Meanwhile, the state government has requested an immediate intervention of the National Emergency Management Agency in the situation.
The request was made by the state Head of Service, Alhaji Dabarako Mohammed.
