LP gov candidate faults Ilorin clash

Date: 2018-12-27

The Labour Party's governorship candidate in Kwara State, Issa Aremu, has condemned the Christmas Day clash between the supporters of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and the All Progressives Congress during the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union's convention in Ilorin.

Aremu, in a statement issued in Ilorin on Wednesday, said the clash was unacceptable.

"The unruly behaviour exhibited at the convention was an unacceptable conduct of leaders and supporters of both PDP and APC in turning annual conference of a 75-year-old great community association like IEDPU into a platform of show of political thuggery and disruption of what certainly promised to be a successful and historic conference," he said.

Aremu called on all contestants to operate within the guidelines and rules of Inter-Party Advisory Council and rules of the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure free and fair elections in the state.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the Kwara APC governorship candidate, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, of an attempt to link the clash to Saraki.

The PDP, in a statement signed by its state Publicity Secretary, Tunde Ashaolu, said, "While we condemn the embarrassing occurrence that played out at the Emir's Palace, we reject false allegations and attempts to blame the disruption on Saraki and his supporters."
