Chief Executive Office of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, has called for the development of sports in the country.

The don, who urged sports stakeholders in the country to support the idea, said developing sports would help create employment as well as marketing and financial platforms to aid the development of Nigeria.

Danbatta, represented by Deputy Director, Spectrum Administration, NCC, Oluwatoyin Asaju, spoke during the NCC Tennis League at the Kwara Stadium Sports Complex in Ilorin on Sunday.

Asaju, who doubles as the Team Leader of the sport event in Kwara, stated that NCC was sponsoring the league to create awareness and enlightenment about tennis.

He appealed to government for more financial and infrastructural investment for overall sports growth.

Danbatta said, "The objective of the league is being achieved. There is a lot of awareness and enlightenment that have been fostered for the development of sports

"The essence of the league is to support the government in developing tennis.

"Another aim of the league is to help the country identify talents who will represent the country in competitions."

He added, "Our opinion is that it is not proper to just concentrate on one sporting event but all of us should contribute our quota. Maybe all the private sector will pick a different sport at different times like what NCC is doing now. We have chosen tennis.

"We hope other corporate organisations, public or private, will support the development of other sports apart from football and tennis."
