Date: 2017-08-11

KWARA State House of Assembly has urged the state government to direct the Ministry of Finance to release all financial approvals on de-silting of drainages in the state to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to avert flood disasters and outbreak of diseases.

The House made the plea after considering a report of the House committee on Health and Environment on a motion entitled: "Prevention of Flood in Kwara State," presented by a member representing Kaiama/Kemanji / Wajibe constituency, Ahmed Ibn Muhammed, on Tuesday.

It also implored the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to intensify on their enlightenment programme to flood affected areas in 2016 as well as other settlements along river banks in other local government areas of the state.

The House also directed its Committee on Health and Environment to pay a visit to Federal Resettlement Centres for an on-the-spot assessment of the facilities towards averting hardship faced by internally displaced peoples (IDPs) in the event of flood disasters and urged the state government, to as a matter of priority, provide facilities in the centres to ease the hardship faced by the IDPs.
