Kwara PDP repositioning for future elections - chairman
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara says it is putting strategies in place to reposition the party, ahead of future elections.
The party’s chairman in the state, Mr Iyiola Oyedepo, said this on Wednesday in Ilorin at a retreat organised for party officials at the state and local government levels.
He told the participants, which also included party leaders, that PDP was determined to mobilise Nigerians for the forthcoming party registration and 2018 population census.
Oyedepo also said that leadership of the party in the state had resolved to commence massive mobilisation and sensitisation of members at the grassroots in readiness for the forth coming local government election.
The chairman charged PDP members in the state to be committed and dedicated while working selflessly for the success of the party in future elections.
He also said that the party would soon inaugurate various committees to engage party members.
A chieftain of the party, Alhaji LAK Jimoh, in a paper, called for total overhaul of the party.
Jimoh also called for re-invigoration of the party at the ward level by holding regular meetings to keep members abreast of unfolding developments.
Party leaders, he added, must also shun avarice and place emphasis on stewardship and accountability in order to win the confidence of members and financiers.
Dr Limota Giwa, the Executive Director, International Women Communication Center (IWCC), in her paper, called for inclusion of more women in the executive of the party.
She lamented that women’s participation in politics was low because of cultural taboos, lack of finance and the traditional belief system.
Giwa, however, appealed to all women to always support female candidates in order to meet the Beijing affirmative action target on women in politics.
A youth leader, Sharafdeen Ibrahim, in his own presentation, said party agents during elections must be literate, bold, courageous and a good observer.
Ibrahim, a lawyer, also appealed to party leaders to refrain from appointing agents based on personal relationship.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retreat was attended by party members from across the 16 council areas of the state. (NAN)
