Nigerians paying for own sins, says Unilorin don
The Dean, Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Professor Badmas 'Lanre Yusuf, has ascribed the myriad of challenges bedeviling the country to catalogue of sins by Nigerians in their respective endeavours.
The don explained that regardless of faith, many Nigerians, who made sinful acts their ways of life, have remained remorseless, thereby invoking the wrath of the Almighty God.
Yusuf, a Professor of Islamic Studies, spoke while delivering a sermon at Hilal Central Mosque, Offa Road, GRA, Ilorin at the weekend.
He said Nigerians are paying costly because of refusal to atone for their sins.
The Islamic Scholar, who made allusion to Quranic verses in his sermon, said Almighty Allah has vowed not to effect positive change in any society that is riddled by sinful conduct.
Yusuf maintained that Nigeria is swimming in ocean of corruption, adding that the act of stealing from common patrimony has become institutionalized with people indicted trivializing criminality.
He noted that it was glaring that there is a nexus between condition Nigerians found themselves and the sins committed in the society.
The Professor of Islamic Studies observed that a society that thrives in comfort yields to the commandment of the Almighty Allah while those that turn it down always languish in problems.
"Let us fear Almighty Allah collectively. Any society that lives comfortably, is obedient to Allah. But for a society that runs from pillar to post, it shows that there is a break in transmission with various commandments of the Almighty Allah.
"There is a nexus between condition we found ourselves today and the sins committed by Nigerians. We swim in ocean of corruption. Gone are the days that you will be tried in a court law for stealing ridiculous amount of money and feel ashamed, that you can't even walk on the road again.
"But these days, you will see people indicted for stealing millions and billions of naira or dollars still laughing or exchanging banters on television screen. That is to tell us how our society has degenerated. It is saddening that this set of people are not even showing remorse for their wickedness to this country", Yusuf said.
