Sango Sec Sch: Will students' descent on staff ever end?

Date: 2016-06-21

Had it happened in higher institutions of learning, a student of Sango Secondary School, senior section, Kulende, Ilorin, fondly called Elébóto by the host community, identified as Lawal Abdulganiy, who descended on his Vice-Principal, Alhaji O.T. Raji, after he (Abdulganiy) was instructed to cut his bushy hair, would have got an instant expulsion sentence from the school authority. But the student could not immediately be penalised by the principal of the school, who instead reported the case to the Kwara State Ministry of Education.

It all started on Friday May 26, 2016, when the Vice-Principal, Alhaji Raji, met Abdulganiy along Oke-Adini Road, Sango Ilorin and, as his teacher who deems it necessary to see to the cleanliness of his students, asked him to have his bushy hair cut. What then followed was least expected by him, as Alhaji Raji got beaten up by the student. The Alangua of Oke-Adini, The Herald Education gathered, later went to the school to apologise to its authorities on behalf of the student and the matter was laid to rest. Abdulganiy's case was just one of the many cases of students descending on teachers and other officials of the school after a check on them over their misconduct.

On Friday, June 3 this year, the Principal of the school was invited to Kulende Police Station alongside one of his teachers, Mr. Oladipo Rafiu, by two police officers who went to the school after part of Mr. Oladipo's cane he was using to discipline the whole SS One class students hit one Abigail Adebayo on the forehead. The student was said to have immediately been given a first aid treatment and the matter ended there that day. But this did not go down well with Abigail's sister, who later went to the school with the police to accuse the teacher. All was believed to be well in the school until last Monday, June 13, when a group of thugs, believed to have been invited by Abigail's aggrieved siblings, besieged the school, requesting that the teacher be provided. Then the school Principal invited the policemen who promptly dispersed them and the school immediately reported the case to the state Teaching Service Commission for immediate action.

Late last year, The Herald Education gathered that one of the Man '' War officials who were on voluntary service in the school was beaten blue, black and all sorts of colours after an argument ensued between the Man O' war men and the students. Since then they had ceased going to the school. Sharing her own experience with The Herald Education, the Principal of Junior section of the school said about two weeks ago, a student was disciplined by his Malim whom the parents handed him over to. Seeing the extent of the corporal punishment given the student, the boy's cousin, identified as Taiye, mobilised a group of boys to beat up an innocent corp member serving in the school. The corp member got the beating of his life over an issue he knew nothing about.

About a week later, another student was disciplined by his teacher. The parents of the student got the teacher arrested. It took the intervention of the school's principal and some other staff members for the teacher to be released late in the night of that day. Incidents like these are not strange to followers of activities of the school. Whenever any student errs and gets punished by the teacher, the teacher is always on the receiving end. The unanswered question the teachers keep asking is: should they keep sweeping the students errors under the carpet? It is however a tough time for them as teachers coping in such school where teachers deal with students in fear.

These and many other untold stories have spurred shocking reactions from teachers who are beginning to seek transfer. The principal of the junior section said three of the teachers had recently been transferred, with one transfer notice pending on her table. Reacting to the development, the state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Alhaji Musa Yeketi, described the situation as unfortunate, stressing that the government has zero tolerance for indiscipline in all its schools.

He reiterated the government's commitment to win the war against indiscipline in both primary and secondary schools in the state. He promised that necessary actions would be taken against all students who had been reported to the ministry, for the bad reasons, by their schools, adding that necessary moves would be made to guarantee safe teaching environment for teachers.

"Unfortunately, the student that beat up the vice-principal is going to face disciplinary action. Thereafter, we would invite the Alangua and other community members of that area. If they don't want any school in that area, fine, we cannot continue to risk the lives of our teachers", he said. The state government, he stressed, is leaving nothing to chance as it would continue to come up with various ways of totally curbing the activities of bad groups in schools, who in his words, are a threat to the government's aspirations to take the state education sector to the next level.

To many keen observers of the activities of the school and followers of educational development of students, what is happening in the school is mind-boggling and a big threat to education which is known as the first ingredient for nation's development. They cannot imagine what the fate of the students looks like after graduation from the secondary school if the needful measure is not put in place immediately in the school to curb the activities of bad students. For them, security measure would go a long way in curbing the menace in the school.
