Ahmed blames herdsmen attack on absence of right policy
Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, Sunday blamed persistent attack by herdsmen on their host communities on the inability of Nigerian government to capture livestock agriculture in the nation's agriculture policy.
Ahmed, in a chat with newsmen in Ilorin, the state capital, asked for a coordination of policy on the sector between the federal and state governments noting that any effort that does not include such collaboration would not yield a positive outcome.
He said the police framework to transform the sector and end the clashes should be driven by the federal government for onward effective and pragmatic operation by states and local governments.
The governor noted that the incessant conflict between herdsmen and farmers across the country would have been avoided if successive governments had made deliberate effort to promote livestock agriculture as part of the national agric practice and not a trade limited to a specific people.
According to him, if that had been done, Nigerians would no longer see cattle rearing as the exclusive basis of ethno-religious consideration, but as a trade that every Nigerian would be able to take up in a favourable atmosphere which would also reflect on the national revenue profile.
