Kwara Assembly reads riot act on illegal filling stations

Date: 2016-05-06

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly Dr. Ali Ahmad has warned that any filling station constructed illegally in the State after the October 15th last year's resolution of the House on the indiscriminate construction of filling stations in the State would be demolished.

The Speaker gave the warning in Ilorin while reacting to 3 petitions on construction of filling stations in residential areas in Adewole and Gaa-Akanbi in Ilorin by Pakata Area Development Association, Christian Association of Nigeria and Adewole Progressive Association presented by the House Leader Alh Hassan Oyeleke and a member representing Oke-Ogun. Constituency Barrister Kamaldeen Fagbemi.

Ahmad who was visibly angry over the proliferation of filling stations in the State said the resolutions of the House had quashi-judicial power and assured the people of the state that the House would tackle the menace by taking decisive action against any erring owners of filling stations to safeguard life and property in the state.

He then enjoined individual, corporate organisations and communities against construction of filling station in their localities to write the House for necessary action.

Meanwhile, the House has ordered the State Town Planning Development Authority to stop the ongoing construction of three filling stations along Shehu Adam El-Ilory and Gaa-Akanbi road in Ilorin. v This is part of the resolutions of the House while receiving three petitions on the construction of additional three filling stations in residential areas in the state capital.

The House equally resolved to send a high powered 4 man delegation to the State Governor, Alh AbdulFatah Ahmed over allegation that approval for construction of filling stations in residential areas in the state emanated from the executive arm of government.

The 4-Man delegation made up of the Deputy Speaker Mattew Okedare, the House Leader Hassan Oyeleke, the Deputy Leader of the House Segilola Abdulkadir and the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on Proliferation of Petrol Stations in the State Kamaldeen Fagbemi has one week to submit its report.
