Kwara establishes Western/Islamic schools to prevent terrorism

Date: 2012-06-25

To prevent terrorism, the Kwara State Government has established model schools in three local government areas where Western and Islamic education would be harmonised.

The Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Mohammed Raji, disclosed this in an interview with journalists at the graduation ceremony of the pupils of Darul- Kitab Wasuuna Islamic College in Ilorin yesterday.

He, however, said the Ministry of Education was waiting for the Federal Government policy in this regard to make the schools take off fully and spread to the remaining councils.

Raji said the government could not afford to raise youths who would become ready tools for acts that would bring religious intolerance in the state or any form of terrorism.

Also the Provost of Darul-Kitab Wasuuna Islamic College, Dr. Faoozy Fazazzy, said the school had been telling its pupils to eschew violence and terrorism.

He reiterated the resolve of the college to bring up young Nigerians who would be good ambassadors of the country.

Fazazzy disclosed that the college had in the last 10 years been assisting children of poor background to pursue higher education in the universities in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and some other countries.

These children, he added, had graduated to become lawyers, lecturers, clerics and professionals in other spheres of human endeavours.

About 379 students graduated from the college on Sunday.
