CCT Trial - Senate Caucuses Meet to Decide Saraki's Fate
Senators met on separate occasions at the caucus level to talk about and decide the fate of the embattled Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki whose case comes up soon at the Code Of Conduct Tribunal for false assets declaration.
He suffered a great setback when the Supreme Court ruled that his trial at the CCT was to continue. This ruling was made on February 5 and there has been palpable fear in his camp as to whether he would still remain in office as the nation's number three citizen.
As the Senate resumes plenary today after a two week hiatus, there is a speculation that he and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu who is also facing trial at the CCT could be removed from office if found guilty by the tribunal.
Our correspondent was able to gather that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is committed to maintaining the status quo of maintaining the current leadership in the upper house of the National Assembly. Ironically, it is some members of the Senate President's All Progressive Congress that are calling for his head.
The Senate Unity Forum, the group that was spearheading the joint ticket of Senator Ahmed Lawan, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence and Senator George Akume, former Benue State Governor met at an unnamed location and are strategizing on how to produce Saraki's successor in case the Strongman of Kwara politics is found guilty at the tribunal.
There was another marathon round of meetings between Senator Ali Ndume, the Senate Leader and President Muhammadu Buhari. Ndume however dispelled fears of any sinister agenda to unseat the senate leadership and said it had nothing to do with Saraki's case as he was sure that the plenary would be peaceful today (Tuesday).
