Date: 2016-01-27

Dr. Tajudeen Ajibade, the Vice-Chairman of the union, presented the amount to Abbas Idris, the Director of the FCT Emergency Management Agency

The University of Ilorin chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday donated N3 million to the Internally Displaced Persons in the Federal Capital Territory.

Dr. Tajudeen Ajibade, the Vice-Chairman of the union, presented the amount to Abbas Idris, the Director of the FCT Emergency Management Agency.

Ajibade said the donation was a display of the ASUU's concern for humanity. He said: "With our concern for humanity and empathy for the IDPs, we just needed to do something.

"We, lecturers from Unilorin decided to donate one per cent of our November salaries to the IDPs to alleviate their plights and that is what we have brought today as our widow's mite."

Idris, while receiving the amount, commended the Unilorin ASUU for its kindness and assured the union that the money would be judiciously used for the interests of the IDPs.

He said: "It is a very kind gesture and we are very grateful. "We have been appealing to the public to equally exhibit such humanitarian gesture to the IDPs and I am glad that some people are responding.

"This is the first of its kind from any Nigerian university and I want to assure you that the money will be judiciously used for the IDPs." Idris also promised the union that the agency would account for how it spent the donation.
