FRSC aims to reduce road crashes, fatalities to barest minimum - Kwara Commander
The Kwara State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Sunday Maku, on Friday said of the 105 crashes recorded in the state in the last one year, 25 people lost their lives, while 120 victims were injured, saying 'the figures were a dramatic reduction in crashes in the state in the preceding years.' Maku stated this at a media briefing on 'The Africa Road Safety Day and World Remembrance Day for road traffic victims," themed, 'It's time to remember to say no to road crime!'
He said the reduction in crashes and victims was as a result of FRSC's aggressive public enlightenment, noting that the FRSC aims to reduce crashes and fatalities to the barest minimum, if it was impossible to totally eradicate same. "In the past one year in Kwara State, there were about 105 crashes. Out of these crashes, we lost 25 victims and we have 120 injured people that were taken to the hospital. We are trying to ensure that we do not have these 25 casualties on our roads again," Maku confirmed.
While urging road users to be safety conscious and avoid road crimes, Maku said, "The causative factors of crashes could be categorised into human, mechanical, environment and institutional factors. All of us are familiar with the three first factors except the institutional factor. "The institutional factors has to do with the government either at the federal, state or local government levels.
"These three tiers of government are institutions that are supposed to see to road construction, rehabilitation and face-lifting of the roads. If these tiers of government are actually doing their own part of the job, definitely these crashes will be reduced," the Commander noted.
