Unilorin ASUU members donate salary to IDPs
Members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin branch, have pledged to donate one per cent of their November, 2015 salary to persons displaced by insurgency in the North-East.
Chairman of the union in the university, Dr AbdulRasheed Adeoye, announced this on Monday at ASUU's congress held in school. He said that the gesture was the members' support to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who were sacked from their homes by Boko Haram insurgents.
Adeoye, in his speech, entitled "You Cannot Walk Alone in the Lecturing Profession", recalled that in 2011, the members of union also donated one per cent of their salary to victims of earthquake in Haiti.
He announced that the branch recently completed the 14 lock-up shops with major facilities for commercial use in the university community. He expressed delight over the 2014 professorial appointments and the just-concluded 2015 promotion in the institution, describing it as "good initiative".
The chairman charged new members of the union in the school to see themselves as "intellectual assets that must be positively creative, innovative and relentlessly proactive". He advised them to be humble so as not to make enemies for themselves in the hierarchical lecturing profession, urging them to locate their "selling points".
Earlier, Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, lauded the union for its quest to maintain the institution's "better by far" status. He said that the institution was the most subscribed in Nigeria, explaining that it attained the status as a result of commitment of the academic staff which made it the best in the country in the recent ranking of universities in the country. Ambali, who was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Sidikat Ijiaya, urged the union to maintain the stability for which the university was known.
