KWHA to Work With Executive on People Oriented Projects

Date: 2015-10-27

Kwara State 8th Legislature says it will work closely with the executive in making policies and programs that would have positive impact on the people.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly Dr Ali Ahmad stated this at the opening ceremony of ongoing retreat for members of the house in Ede, Osun State.

Dr Ahmad said it is the constitutional responsibility of the legislators to scrutinize the appropriation bill before passing into law. He implored his colleagues to take advantage of the retreat by participating actively noting that the objective of the program was to make them better prepared for the legislative tasks.

Meanwhile members of the Kwara House of Assembly have been advised to adopt outcome based budget. The Director of Research, National Institute for Legislative Studies Abuja, Dr Asimiu Abiola who gave the advice at the ongoing retreat for the lawmakers at Ede, Osun state, observed that a good budget must address three essential factors which includes, increasing employment, reduce inequality and poverty.

Dr Abiola said that the zero budgeting system being considered by Federal Government is good but not the best for Nigeria.

On his part, Dr Kanayo Uba, also from the National Institute for Legislative Studies, urged lawmakers to be concerned about results of funds they allocate to Ministries, Department and Agencies. Dr Kanayo maintained that with their oversight functions, the legislators can detect projects that are people oriented and those that were used to siphon public funds on annual basis.
