Gov. Ahmed, Sen. Saraki, Baraje, Emir of Ilorin, among others bemoan crash
Messages of condolences have continued to pour in from personalities across the country for the victims of the Dana air crash in Lagos on Sunday.
The plane, McDonnell Douglas MD-83, crashed into residential buildings on Akande Street, Iju, Lagos, and burst into flames, killing the 153 passengers on board. The plane left Abuja for Lagos.
In their messages, governors Ahmed Abdulfatah (Kwara), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Patrick Yakowa (Kaduna), Theodore Orji (Abia), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Jonah Jang (Plateau), Babangida Aliyu (Niger) and Sullivan Chime (Enugu), described the accident as a national tragedy.
Former Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki, former Peoples Democratic Party Acting Chairman, Kawu Baraje; Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu -Gambari; Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro; Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri; Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on National Planning, Economic Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin; and the Action Congress of Nigeria candidate for the 2011 Kwara State governorship election, Mr. Dele Belgore, also lamented the crash.
Ahmed, in a statement, advised aviation authorities to stop at nothing in finding out the cause of the crash in order to avert future occurrence. He called for a national prayer to complement government’s efforts to avert further tragedy in the country. He also said the crash was a national disaster.
Fashola said, "I hardly can find words to express my feelings. People trying to earn a living and ending up dead so tragically and untimely is not something one can imagine."
Sulu-Gambari, who spoke through the Emirate spokesperson, Alhaji Salihu Mohammed, advised against blaming the Federal Government, institutions or people until investigations into the crash were concluded. According to him, the investigation should unravel the actual and remote causes of the crash.
Amosun, who visited the scene of the crash, condoled with the Federal Government, Nigerians and the family of those who perished in the accident and prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims.
Mimiko, in a statement, said, "Our aviation managers should begin to prevent the preventable because many destinies are prone to destruction each time breadwinners are lost to plane crashes."
Jang regretted the loss of lives and condoled with the families of the victims, calling for a proper investigation into the crash in order to strengthen the industry.
Yakowa said, "The unfortunate crash of the aircraft coming on the heels of a similar one involving a Nigerian registered cargo aircraft in Ghana a day earlier and the unfortunate bombing of churches in Bauchi State is to say the least, one tragedy too many."
Moro said, "I feel sad that a calamity of this magnitude is befalling the nation at a time that government is doing everything to restore confidence in our institutions."
Aliyu expressed the hope that the investigation ordered by President Goodluck Jonathan would help unravel the immediate and remote cause of the crash.
Saraki called on the appropriate authorities to carry out a true fact finding investigation to determine the cause of the tragic incident.
Chime also urged the aviation industry to take all necessary steps, especially the strict enforcement of standards, to ensure that such disasters do not recur.
