Subsidy Probe: SSANU calls for pump price slash - Meeting in Ilorin

Date: 2012-06-05

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has said following the massive fraud uncovered by the Farouk Lawan led House of Representatives Committee in the administration of fuel subsidy in Nigeria, there is no justification for the current N97 per a litre of petrol.

Leaders of the union subsequently called on the Federal Government to consider a downward review of the pump price of all petroleum products especially petrol and kerosene.

In a communiqué at the end of their National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Ilorin, Kwara State, leaders while re-iterating their stand against upward review of electricity tariff in Nigeria, advised the government to pay the required attention to the energy sector and ensure adequate power supply to the citizens.

According to the communiqué "NEC-in-session observed that regular electricity supply is central to every viable economy. The Council deplored a situation whereby electricity supply is at its lowest ebb, leading to a steady decline of Nigeria’s economy.

Any economy that is generator-driven as it is happening in Nigeria today, encourages capital flight and makes nonsense of the import substitution strategy and the foreign investment drive of the present administration.

NEC therefore calls on the Federal Government to pay the required attention to the energy sector and ensure adequate power supply. The Council also re-iterates its earlier stand against upward review of electricity tariff in Nigeria more so in the face of the current abysmally low electricity supply."

"NEC-in-session expressed its profound gratitude to the National Assembly for identifying with the pains and sufferings of common Nigerians as a result of Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy on January 1st2012 leading to over 100% increase in the pump price of petrol. The Fuel Subsidy probe has opened the eyes of Nigerians to the truth, that is, how a few Nigerians otherwise known as ‘cabal’ impoverish Nigeria and Nigerians under the guise of fuel subsidy.

NEC therefore calls on the Federal Government to fully implement the Report of the Farouk Lawan led Committee on Fuel Subsidy Regime without delay. In the light of the findings of the Farouk Lawan Committee, NEC also calls on the Federal Government to consider a downward review of all petroleum products especially petrol and kerosene."

It added that "NEC-in-session observed with utter dismay the regularity with which scam of monumental proportions are taking place in Nigeria with impunity. This is in spite of the activities of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and Independent Corrupt Practices and other Offences Commission, ICPC, which give the impression that the Government is at war against corruption.

Nigerians and indeed the whole world are yet to see the casualties of this war, as little or nothing tangible has come out of the various scams uncovered by the National Assembly as exemplified in the Pension Unit of Head of Service of the Federation, Police Pensions, Health Ministry, Security and Exchange Commission, SEC, Power Sector, Banking Sector, Oil Subsidy scams and others. This is a clear indication that the so-called Government’s war against corruption is ineffective and a window dressing."

"NEC therefore calls on the Federal Government to give a time-frame within which all corruption cases would be concluded in court; and in doing this, Government should avoid ‘Plea Bargaining’ which in itself is a scam. NEC hereby reiterates its earlier call on the Federal Government to set up special courts to handle cases of hybrid corruption, expeditiously. This is one of the ways Government would regain the confidence of Nigerians."
