2015 polls: Nigerians advocate more effective voting process, commend INEC

Date: 2015-04-12

Nigerians have advocated new strategy in combating rigging and manipulations in future elections in Nigeria, following the failure of Card Readers in some places in the second and final leg of the 2015 General Elections held all over the country yesterday.

The Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Demola Nurudeen Banu expressed concern over the verification of voters with card readers, saying that even though it worked in most places, it was slow.

He praised the turn-out, observing that it was more than the first election on March 28.

Former Commissioner for Water Resources, Khaleel Bolaji, while reacting to the development in Omupo said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would overcome the challenges in future elections, but charged the body to take note of the problems and make amends in future.

Also reacting to the issue in Omupo, the Special Adviser, Development Strategy, Mr. Wasiu Odewale expressed disappointment with the card readers, but said that Nigeria would get over it in the next election. Chairman of the Kwara State Pension Board, Yakub Abdulraheem in his reaction berated INEC for its inability to rectify the faults identified, especially with the card readers, in the second round of elections yesterday. The machine worked perfectly in Oro and its environs, and as at 11.00am, accreditation of voters had already been concluded. Mr. Matthew Obaoye, who is contesting the State House of Assembly election in Oro, praised INEC for making sure the card readers worked effectively.

Obaoye, who is the Isokan One of Oro, said that the card readers worked well, and the turn-out was high.

Samson Bada, the APC Youth Coordinator in Irepodun Local Government also hailed the process as peaceful and hitch-free.

Former Commissioner for Environment and Tourism, Chief Sikiru Bakare lamented the low turn-out of voters across the nine polling units of Ijara-Isin ward, but said that the card readers machine were effective.

Former Deputy Governor of the state, Chief Joel Afolabi Ogundeji, while comparing the March 28 exercise to yesterday's election said yesterday's poll was not as neat as the first election.

According to him, 'People are prepared to cause problem, and I don't know why they are so desperate'.

He said that he was insulted and embarrassed by the youths, who later apologised to him.

He said that INEC has improved on the electoral process, and that it was the society that is making the process difficult through jobless youths.

The Chairman of Isin Local Government Area, Barrister Mar'auf Thanni said that turn-out was high, especially at Iwo Community Primary School where he registered and voted, even as he hailed the security men and INEC for a job well done.

On the lessons learnt in the elections, Barrister Thanni said that it is God that appoints people to positions, and not by power or money.

He charged winners and losers to learn from their fate, and for the winners to carry the losers along because they are all working towards development.

The Permanent Secretary of Bureau of Statistics, Alhaji Nasiru Ibrahim also said the card readers machine even though did not work to perfection, was effective.

He said that there was improvement on the turn-out because they learnt lessons from the outcome of the Presidential poll.
