Ilorin Emirate bemoans worsening insecurity, holds summit
Ilorin Emirate in Kwara State is to hold a security summit to find solution to the astronomical growth of insecurity in the area.
The summit which has as its theme, "Challenges of Insecurity in Ilorin Emirate and the Role of the Community," is scheduled for Saturday at Stella Obasanjo Multipurpose Hall in Ilorin town.
Abdulhamid Adi, Chairman of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), who said the union organised the summit on behalf of the emirate disclosed that the state government is partnering with the community on the summit.
Briefing newsmen on the programme on Wednesday, Adi said the community was concerned about the how the state of insecurity has worsened compared with what it was in the last two decades.
He said the community was worried about the rate at which insecurity spread across all divides and the impact it had on safety of lives and property, development and investment.
"More worrisome are the high level of impunity in the commission of crime, the proliferation of arms and other means of wasting life, the emergence of hitherto unknown crimes and habits in our environment, the helplessness of the public, and the seeming incapability of government," he added.
Adi said such factors as unemployment, poverty, pervasive inequality, loss of value systems, weak security system, use of drugs that is becoming fashionable among the youths, religious conflicts, political volatility might not be unconnected with the cause of the insecurity and crimes in general in a society.
He said the community planned the summit to complement efforts of the government in fighting insecurity.
He however said the community was of the opinion that one of the cardinal responsibilities of government in ensuring public safety has a hitch and that the principal organs in maintaining law and order are over-stretched, while the criminal justice system is a little weak with the rule of law collapsing.
He said the summit would focus on how to rid the community off hoodlums, cultists, ritual killers, kidnappers, drug sellers and other crime agents.
"We want to come up with various ways to reduce opportunities to commit crime and lessen the motivation for crime.
"We want to come up with crime prevention measures that will be complementary to government efforts through law enforcement," he added.
