Kwara PDP bans factional groups, targets N600 milion from members

Date: 2014-06-10

The Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the party would not allow any group or organisation to form any factional group with the aim of promoting selfish interests, noting that any interested organisation must register with the party.

The state Chairman of the party, Mr Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo, who made this known while addressing the enlarged stakeholders of the party in the state, said the party targets the sum of N600 million from members' annual contributions.

According to him, the philosophy behind this idea of membership financial commitment through annual contribution is to create responsible, committed and proud members of the party that will be desirous to continually work for the success of the party.

The chairman, who promised to run an all inclusive administration, said the ban was to instill unity of purpose towards the party success in general elections.

Oyedepo pointed out that, "Factional interest, if allowed will tear the party apart. If we are divided, we shall not be able to chase the ruling APC out of power in Kwara State.

"This is why we have banned in this party all interests that will not align with the party's structure that we have jointly put together."

Oyedepo also said no member of the state executive of the party is permitted to be a member of either unity or freedom groups or any other organisation(s) formed or deemed to be formed to promote factional interests.

"If we desire to run all inclusive party administration and we are doing just that, why should any group still stand up to promote factional interests when we have enough assignment for all?

"If we are to prevent division in this party, then the leadership at this level must just be responsible enough not only to shun divisive tendencies but most consciously work for the unity within the party," he added.

Oyedepo said that henceforth, all associations formed to further the cause of the party shall be registered with the party and have their programmes and activities vetted by the party.

He added that aspirants wishing to contest elective offices can, however, formed their campaign outfits.

According him, once the candidates of the party emerged after the primaries, all campaign outfits shall fold up while all party members shall then work for the candidates of the party to ensure victory at the polls.

Oyedepo noted that discipline would be strictly enforced and the executive shall be firm and fair in decision making and implementation.

He also said that the state chapter of the party has domesticated the party manifesto in order to address specific issues unique to the state.

"We have been accustomed in Kwara State to politics without message, philosophy and programme," Oyedepo said.

The chairman said the purpose of domesticating the party manifesto was to change the practice of politics devoid of contents in the state.

"We shall with this document sign a pact with the people and use it to sensitise, mobilize and organise the people on the party's programs of freeing the state from bondage", Oyedepo added.

The chairman told the stakeholders that the PDP now solely belonged to the people and not a godfather or in the hand of one man. He said that through sole party funding, the people of Kwara State have always been politically and economically enslaved.

He lamented that the phenomenon of godfatherism in Kwara State has never been based on knowledge, wisdom and skill, but on the wrong deployment of money to dominate and control.

"The developing scenario in the party today is that we are trying to jointly contribute to the cooking of the soup so that we can eat it together with pride," he said.

He submitted that fund raising shall become the feature of the party in the state as PDP now belonged to all through collective financial contributions.
