Kwara gov in strange romance with PDP? *It's untrue - Gov's aide

Date: 2014-05-18

Kwara State governor, Alhaji Abdufattah Ahmed, is said to have started a strange romance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2015 general election.

The strapping development, according to sources, is traceable to indications within the camp of Senator Bukola Saraki that the governor would not enjoy a second term in office.

Sources had confirmed that the senator, a former governor of the state, had secured a promise from Abdufattah ahead of his endorsement for governorship position in 2011 that he would only spend one term in office.

The former governor was said to have reminded Abdufattah of that promise during last year's Umrah, lesser Hajj.

It was also confirmed that though Abdufattah was aware of Saraki's disposition on the second term issue, he followed the former governor on the dissenting trip into the G5 camp.

The G5 governors eventually defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last November.

It was gathered that the governor believed that Saraki would change his mind and allow him seek re-election as a result of the loyalty he had shown him.

Sources, however, stated that Abdufattah had in recent weeks flagged off some strategic discussions with the leadership of the PDP.

It was gathered that top hierarchy of the PDP in Kwara and Abuja had been reached by the governor who is seeking the party's ticket for re-election.

A source said that Abdufattah had reached the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, who is said to be disposed to the idea.

If the plan works, Abdufattah would be received in the PDP in the next few weeks while the party is expected to prevail upon its members to allow the governor pick the 2015 ticket.

But members of the party in Kwara are said to be insisting that the move by Governor Abdufattah Ahmed is a clever ploy by Saraki and his allies to cripple the PDP in Kwara and win the state.

Reacting to the allegation that Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed is romancing PDP leadership for second term ticket in 2015, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Alhaji Wahab Oba, said the allegation was not only contemptuous but provocative.

"For a governor who has for the last three years has been doing well and for somebody who left PDP because of the impunity in the party based on the fact that the party has not been guided by rule of law. What will he be looking for in PDP for him to be romancing with the party?

"Assuming without conceding that Governor Ahmed is going to PDP, which of the factions would he join? Is it that of Oba Abdulraheem, Gbemi Saraki, Simeon Ajibola, Bola Shagaya or that of Dele Belgore? Which one? The party without leader, direction, mission or vision or hope of winning any election.

"The fact is that the rumour is being peddled by PDP that is already drowning, going down and down and only want somebody to pull down along with it to drown together. For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Ahmed has perfect and faultless relationship with the former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, who is the leader of APC and who has been giving direction to the party in the state," he said.
