Woman, 60, 24 others docked for extortion
A 60-year-old woman, Memunat Ganiyu of Adabata Area, Ilorin, Kwara State, along with 24 other suspected hoodlums have been arraigned before an Ilorin Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly extorting motorists.
The accused were arrested on March 28 following a tip-off at 'C' Division Police Station, Ilorin, that some miscreants of Adabata, Isale-Aluko and Ita-Sapele Area, Ilorin, were attacking and extorting money from innocent transporters at Adabata/Oja-Tuntun Area, Ilorin.
The suspected hoodlums were accused of damaging several properties and injured one Bukola Kayode and many others.
Based on the strength of the information, police swung into action and arrested Fatai Jimoh, 18; Abdullahi Wasiu, 22; Yunusa Usman, 40; Lukman Ayuba, 35; Nurudeen Jamiu, 45; Abdulraheem Sheriff, 23; Wasiu Adebayo, 27; Mustapha Nuru, 34; Ismail Sheu, 23 and Fatai Musa.
Others are: Kehinde Ishola, 25; Mutiu Ganiu, 28, Olarewaju Abolarinwa; Rafiu Eleweogede, 22; Fatai Salman; Jimoh Saka, 30; Kamldeen Muhmud, 17; Shehu Shuaib, 24; Azeez Abdullahi, 22; Abdulganiu Suleiman, 26; Yusuf Kamldeen, 18; Ibrahim Kamldeen, 20; Abdulraheem Salman; Adamu Ahmed, 19 and the 60-year-old woman, Memunat Ganiyu, all of Adabata/Okelele Area, Ilorin.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that investigation conducted at Department of Criminal Investigation revealed that the accused criminally conspired and committed the crime.
The accused were brought before the court on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, disturbance of public peace, mischief and causing grievous hurt, contrary to Sections 97, 114, 327 and 247 of Penal Code Law.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Mathew Ologbonsaye, who informed the court that investigation into the matter was yet to be completed, objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them in prison custody pending the outcome of investigation into the matter.
The accused, who denied the allegation, prayed the court to grant them bail pending the outcome of investigation.
The trial Magistrate, Mrs. A.O. Adeniyi declined to the oral application of the prosecutor and released the accused on bail pending the determination of their case.
The court adjourned the matter till April 30 for further mention.
