Kwara Moves to Control House Rent

Date: 2013-10-10

Kwara State government is plan-ning to control rent paid by tenants in the state. This comes as the Rent Control and Recovery of Premises Bill, 2013, passed second reading as the state House of Assembly yesterday.

The bill sent to the House by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed seeks to, among others, control house rent by landlords and protect the interest of prospective and current tenants.

If passed into law, the bill would stop the practice of collecting more than one year's rent as done by some landlords just as house owners would be compelled to provide all the required facilities needed in a house.

Besides, the bill also empowers landlords to evict debtors who fail to pay their rent after a month's notice.

Before it passed second reading, the bill generated controversy in the House as some members opposed it on the ground that landlords have rights over their property.
