Monarchs commend Kwara over upgrading committee
Some traditional rulers in Kwara on Monday commended the recent composition of a committee by the state government on the upgrading of traditional rulers.
The rulers, the Asolo of Isolo-Opin, Oba Raphael Sunday and the Elegosi of Egosi-Ile, Oba Daniel Dada, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Omu-Aran.
“With the recent composition of the committee purposely for the upgrading of traditional rulers, the government had once again demonstrated its commitment to the wellbeing of the royal fathers.
“It has been our hope and desire that the government would look into the issue of upgrading of deserving traditional rulers who are already due for such elevation,” Sunday said.
He said that the traditional institution in the state had never failed in its responsibility, adding that it would continue to assist government in its efforts to raise the standard of living of the citizenry.
Sunday also pledged the continued support of the traditional rulers in ensuring that the much needed peace was achieved.
In his remarks, Dada expressed the hope that the composition of the committee and its expected positive outcome would spur the traditional rulers to do more in the service of their communities.
He said traditional rulers often strived to ensure the rapid growth and development of their communities by embarking on various self help projects.
“Since our movement from our old abode near Ilofa town to the present site about two years ago, we have embarked on the construction of roads and electrification schemes through our own communal efforts.
“Some of these projects and others similar ones like the construction of the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC) posts are executed through levies and donations.
“It is our genuine hope that government will reciprocate the community’s gesture by upgrading the Elegosi stool to its deserving status,” Dada said
The state government had about a week ago constituted a committee to look into the requests of some traditional rulers for upgrading.
The committee is headed by a former member of the House of Representatives from the state, Alhaji Wahab Isa.
The state deputy governor, Peter Kisira, had at the inauguration of the committee said, “while all requests could not be granted, it is expedient to scrutinise such requests and appropriately upgrade those deserving elevation.’’
