Date: 2013-08-24

The Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Abuja office, Ishaya Chonoko, on Friday, said that the agency would set up two camps in Kwara State to cater for displaced victims of natural disasters.

He made this known while speaking in Ilorin at a seminar on camp management and the incidence of collapsed buildings.

Chonoko said the seminar attracted volunteers from the 16 local government areas of the state as well as representatives of security agencies in the state.

According to him, the agency had already visited the camp sites in Kwara North, where the highest cases of disaster occurred in the state.

The coordinator assured that camps would be furnished with all necessary amenities to make life comfortable for the victims during their temporary stay.

Chonoko, while speaking on the objective of the seminar, said it aimed to enlighten the participants on the need to respond promptly to disasters in any part of the state.

He urged the state government to give more support to the state Emergency Management Agency and train the  volunteers on how to rescue victims.

Salamat Yahya, the Secretary of the state Emergency Management Agency, said that government was embarking on a campaign to avert disasters in the state.

She called on participants to make use of the knowledge acquired from the seminar to complement the efforts of the state government in averting disasters.
