The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has said that the state government would ensure the development of sports at the grassroots.

In an interview with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday, he stated that grassroots’ sports development would help in identifying and harnessing budding sporting talents. He added that this will accelerate the growth of sports at the state, national and international levels.

The governor said that the state government would revive inter-local government sports festival that would encourage competition among youths in the 16 local government areas of the state.

He added that the government would also ensure provision of modern facilities to boost sports activities in the state, adding that football would be given a boost in the state.

Ahmed said, "We will ensure that we bring back the glorious days of indoor sports hall. The training pitches we have will be brought to current levels. We will be doing activities such as the inter-local government sports festival. This will not only bring the best out of our youths, but also prepare us against future national and international competition.

"We are going to make football another key thing that will be competed for among our secondary schools. That also is a way to bring out the best out of our youths so that each time the need for competitions comes out, we know we have ready talents."
