Happy belated birthday to Kwara state at 46 and congratulations to Governor Ahmed on the celebration of his 2nd year anniversary as the governor of the state. But at this stage, we should look back at events and put a check on what has been achieved so far.

Human development, affordable and accessible educational and health care system, good roads especially in the rural areas, potable water and power supply, all were among Governor Ahmed's agenda when he was sworn in as the governor.  It is quite unfortunate that 2 years on, little or nothing has been achieved.

The only major improvement in health sector has been the construction of new general hospitals in the state which unfortunately are still under construction but can be still evident. Most primary health care centres (PHC) are not functioning at their best because of shortage of drugs and lack of basic medical equipment. Most PHC centres are understaffed to cater for the health needs of the people of the community. Also, our dear governor is yet to deliver on his promises of community based health care system within 500 metres. Scores of people still depend largely on the tertiary health institution in the state i.e. U.I.T.H.

The educational sector had its own share of the promises made by the governor which he's yet to deliver on. Most government owned schools (primary schools and secondary schools) are either not conducive for learning or not well equipped with the required teaching aids and materials. Some are under staffed and in some rural communities, schools are not visible at all.

Rural electrification is non existence as most rural areas in the state are still in darkness and the promise of connecting them to the national grid is still far from reality.

The Kwara State University has enjoyed some attention lately. The most recent being the construction of the new faculty of engineering at Malete but 4 years after it came into being, we are yet to see the other two campuses coming on board (Ilesha and Isin).

 Infrastructural development and maintenance has majorly been concentrated on the state capital, Ilorin, alone. The people of Offa and Kaiama are still begging the governor to repair their roads which have been neglected for years.

Kwara state is an agriculturally endowed state but it is so unfortunate that majority of government policies is only visible at Shonga farms (which is not fully owned by the state) and has led other farmers to flee the rural areas and seek greener pastures in the city centres where most of them are now okada riders and some engage in armed robbery, kidnappings and other illicit acts.

Forget the +2000 jobs they said were created so far, it is either you are in the ruling party or you know someone in the system before you can be considered for a job you are qualified for.

KWABES was introduced to address the problem of unemployment but what you will see today is favouritism, jobs are only given to their cronies and allies, and this is already taking a negative effect on the state as armed robbery and secret cult clashes are on the increase in the state, especially in the state capital.

Minimum wage is not paid in the state as claimed by the governor, a meagre amount is added to salaries and claim they are already paying the 18000 minimum wage.

After all said and done, the governor has under performed on his own agenda and promises, but what do Kwarans want in the next two years?

What Kwarans want are: An accessible and affordable health care system so that the people in the rural and urban areas will have confidence in their secondary and primary health centres. Educational policies and actions  which will make sure that all schools are conducive and well equipped for learning. Connecting the rural areas to the urban areas with the construction of good roads so as to facilitate economic growth. Industrialisation and increased IGR, job creation which should cater for scores who are unemployed and make sure the best are always given the jobs. Agricultural policies that will provide farmers with needed materials for effective food production.

If the above and more can be done, Kwarans will definitely say thank you to Mr. Governor after his four years and even re-elect him.
