Flood: Kwara Creates Temporary Camps
The Kwara State government has provided temporary camps to relocate victims in the state in view of NIMET prediction on possible flood.
It would be recalled that no fewer than five local governments in the state were affected in last year’s flooding which destroyed property, farm produce and buildings. With the prediction by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), warning states including Kwara to prepare for heavy rain and flooding in 2013, the state government has directed people in flood prone areas to relocate immediately as all areas in the state are “being watered”.
Chairman of the state Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Committee, Alhaji Dabarako Mohammed, during a joint press briefing on some of the preventive measures being taken to check the effect of flood, he said the committee would tour all flood prone communities to relocate them and provide the necessary logistics support.
Mohammed, who is the state Head of Service, also called on the management of Jebba dam not to wait until the dam overflows before releasing its content, saying, “By the time it gets to 90 per cent, they should release the water. With NIMET prediction of heavy rainfall, all areas in the state are being watered and we are expecting increased rainfall. Towards this end, the governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has directed us to start going to the affected local governments to ask them to relocate”.
