Date: 2013-04-06

Association of Resident Doctors, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital says over 4.3million Nigerians above the age of 15 are suffering from hypertension.

The President of the Association, Dr Dele Tajudeen, made this known in Ilorin while speaking with newsmen on the sidelines of a general medical screening organised for civil servants in the state Ministry of Education.

Over 40 resident doctors from UITH conducted the check-up organised for the workers in which various tests were conducted for the workers, including screening for blood sugar level, blood pressure and health counselling.

An online publication- healthy-blood-pressure-tip- says, "10 per cent of Nigerian population have hypertension." Statistics available show that high blood pressure is on the rise in Nigeria and affects more of the urban folks than it does their rural counterparts.

"The World Health Organisation (WHO) attributes hypertension among Nigerians to high consumption of salt and fat, low consumption of fruits and vegetables and lack of physical activity."

Tajudeen said that non-communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes and cancer were rampant in the society, adding that communicable diseases had been mostly controlled.
