Power Surge Triggers Fire at Oloje Housing Estate in Ilorin, No Casualty Recorded

Date: 2026-05-22

A fire outbreak caused by a power surge has affected sections of an eight-flat residential building at Oloje Phase 2 Housing Estate in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 15:28hrs at Phase Two, Oloje Housing Estate, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The development was confirmed on Thursday by Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service.

In a statement, Adekunle said the incident "involved a residential building consisting of about eight-bedroom flats."

He stated, "The fire affected the sitting room and dining area of the building. Firefighters responded promptly to the distress call and successfully brought the fire under control, thereby preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was attributed to a power surge. No casualty was recorded during the incident.

"The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service advised residents to always switch off electrical appliances when not in use and ensure proper maintenance of electrical installations to prevent fire outbreaks caused by power fluctuations and electrical faults," the statement further said.

"The Service also urged members of the public to remain safety conscious and promptly report any fire emergency to the nearest fire station."

Recall that in April, a fire outbreak razed parts of a business plaza along Airport Road in Kano, destroying two hospital equipment shops.

The Kano State Fire Service said the incident occurred at No. 20A Airport Road in Fagge Local Government Area.
