Offa Poly Alumni Group Demands Constitutional Compliance in Executive Election
A group of members of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State Alumni Association, operating under the banner of the Justice Forum, has called for strict compliance with the association's constitution in the conduct of the election of a new executive.
The group also sought judicial interpretation over alleged irregularities that led to the recent cancellation of the officers' election.
According to the group, several discrepancies and signs of manipulation were allegedly identified in the voter register released by the Electoral Committee on November 29, alongside what it described as a misinterpretation of constitutional provisions guiding voters' eligibility.
The co-convener of the Justice Forum, Olabode Owoeye, in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune, stressed that: "While all contestants in the cancelled election are respected and qualified members of the association, strict adherence to the alumni constitution must take precedence over personal relationships or improvised guidelines."
He maintained that the electoral committee guidelines must align strictly with the alumni constitution and warned against setting precedents that could lead to recurring leadership crises.
He added that where constitutional provisions are considered outdated, amendments, not selective interpretations, remain the lawful route.
Owoeye noted that the tenure of the current executive officers ended on July 30, stressing that the constitution empowers the Board of Trustees (BoT) to oversee the affairs of the association pending the resolution of the dispute.
Dismissing suggestions of ulterior motives, he said the group's actions are driven solely by the need to uphold equity, fairness and constitutional integrity within the association.
