Man Jailed for Attempted Homicide After Slitting Victim's Throat
Justice I. Olawoyin of the Kwara State High Court has convicted one Abdullateef Yakub of attempted culpable homicide and causing grievous bodily harm.
Yakub was found guilty of using a knife to slit the throat of Abubakar Babatunde in the Shao Garage area on 26 December 2023.
During the trial, the prosecution called four witnesses, including the victim, to establish its case. The defendant also testified in his own defence and called his father as a witness. After assessing the evidence presented by both sides, Justice Olawoyin maintained that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently convicted the defendant.
Yakub was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for Attempted Culpable Homicide and three years' imprisonment, or the option of a N50,000 fine, for causing grievous bodily harm.
The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of five years in prison.
The prosecution team was led by Ibrahim Sulyman, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, whose office pursued the matter to ensure justice was delivered.
The conviction reinforces the judiciary's commitment to holding perpetrators of violent crimes accountable and safeguarding public safety.
