Kwara is Wrong on Council Dissolution - Afenifere

Date: 2013-02-13

A socio-cultural group, the Afenifere Renewal Group in Kwara state has faulted the dissolution of Offa and Oyun local government councils of the state by the state government, describing it as undemocratic.

Following a clash between the Offa and Erin-Ile communities in the two areas, the state government dissolved the two councils on the ground that the two council chairs refused to enforce the local government bye.

Faulting the dissolution in a statement jointly signed by its state chairman, Chief Joe Olarogun and secretary, Mr. Lateef Bamidele, the group said the action was "political" because according to them, Offa council was being controlled by the opposition.

The group berated the Abdulfatah Ahmed-led administration for blaming the councils for the crisis which according to them, should have been prevented by the state government which had all security apparatus at its disposal and knew the history of the age long communal crisis.

It queried why same sanctions was not applied to Ifelodun and Edu local governments when similar crisis was experienced between Share and Tsaragi communities in the two areas respectively.

The group therefore called on the sate governor to rescind its decision just as it called for a review of the Kwara state local government law no 4 which empowers the governor to dissolve councils without recourse to the state house of assembly, describing it as "draconian"
