NYSC Withdraws Corps Members from School After Alleged Assault
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management has withdrawn all corps members serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, following an alleged assault on a serving female corps member at the school last week, as reported by the Nigerian Tribune.
According to reports, around 10 corps members serving in both the junior and senior arms of the school were withdrawn on Monday by the Kwara State Directorate of the NYSC.
The Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha'u Ahmed, visited the school on Monday to assess the situation before proceeding to inspect the members of the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2, at the ongoing orientation course in Yikpata community, Edu Local Government Area of the state.
The withdrawal of the corps members is seen as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety and well-being, following the alleged incident.
During his visit, he ordered that all corps members serving in the school be withdrawn temporarily to ensure their safety.
Speaking on the development, the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit of the NYSC in the state, Mr. Oladipo Morakinyo, confirmed on Tuesday the withdrawal of corps members serving in both the junior and senior secondary schools.
“Yes, it is true that all NYSC members serving in the school have been withdrawn temporarily, pending the outcome of the investigation by the panel set up by the government regarding the alleged assault on one of the corps members.
“Though the assaulted corps member serves in the junior school, we had to withdraw all corps members from the senior school as well to protect them from potential attacks,” Morakinyo said.
It was reported that the female corps member was allegedly assaulted by some female teachers who accused her of not greeting them properly last Thursday.
The Kwara State Government condemned the act and set up an investigation team to uncover the details of the incident.
The State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa'adatu Modibbo-Kawu, stated that the government strongly condemns the alleged assault on the youth corps member serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.
“The Kwara State Government condemns the recent alleged assault on a youth corps member serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, by a teacher identified as Mrs. Amuzat Fatima Nike.
“This act is unacceptable in our society and in Kwara State as a whole. The state is known for peace and harmony, and the government will not tolerate anything that disrupts the existing peace in its academic institutions.
“The Anti-Loitering Team of the Ministry and the Management Team of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission paid an unscheduled visit to the school to investigate the alleged assault case, and calm has been restored,” she said.
The commissioner appealed to the NYSC management and all concerned parties to be patient, remain law-abiding, and perform their duties without fear, assuring them that the concerned teacher has been summoned and necessary disciplinary measures will be taken accordingly, as stated in the government's release.
