Boat conveying 100 persons capsizes in Kwara
A Boat conveying over 100 people has capsized in River Niger around Patigi in Kwara State.
The incident occurred at the early hours on Tuesday while they were returning from a wedding ceremony at Gboti community to Ebbu village in the state.
A Resident of Patigi, Malam Isah Gimba told Radio Nigeria that only 15 corpses have so far been recovered out of the over 100 on board.
The Secretary Patigi Local Government Area Malam Idris Pata Mohammed said the Council has mobilized people to support the victims who cuts across Zakkan in Kwara and Sanpi village in Kogi State.
He however advised people residing in riverine areas to desist from night journeys as the River Niger may over run its bank due to heavy downpour.
This is not the first boat disaster the country is witnessing this year as 15 persons also died when a boat capsized in Sokoto State.
The boat was trying to cross to Mashayan Dundeje Village to collect firewood, according to an eyewitness who spoke to Radio Nigeria in the state.
The accident which also occurred in the early hours of Tuesday saw more than 15 children drowned, and another 25 are missing, according to the political administrator of the council, Aliyu Abubakar.
In 2023 alone, states such as Bayelsa and Niger have also experienced boat mishap
