5 Arrested As Transport Unions, Tricycle Operators Clash In Kwara
No fewer than five persons have been arrested over the clash between members of the Tricycle Operators Association of Nigeria (TOAN) and their counterparts in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
It was gathered that the bloody clash which at the weekend resulted from a minor accident involving a tricycle and a Mitsubishi truck at Oko Olowo degenerated into a free-for-all, leaving some members of the transport unions with injuries.
According to residents, the tricycle operator made a U-turn in the middle of the road which led to the collision with the truck which was conveying fresh meat.
The crisis which later spread to areas like Oloje, Alore, and Omoda leftover 20 vehicles and tricycles damaged.
When City & Crime visited the area, there was tension as tricycles were not allowed to operate.
Reacting to the development, the police spokesman in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, told City & Crime that five suspects had been arrested.
According to him, "The commissioner of police, Tuesday Assayomo, is displeased at the rate some transport operators are inclined to lawlessness in the state.
"Therefore, the CP has charged the leaders of all the transport unions to call their members to order."
