Kwara: Police, civil defence beef up security for independence celebration

The Kwara State Police Commissioner, Amienbo Tuesday Assayomo, has directed that entry and exit points to the state be fortified for the 61st independence celebration of in the state on Friday.

A total of 1,500 policemen and women have been assigned to provide security during the celebration, according to the spokesman of the state police command, Mr Okasanmi Ajayi, in a statement in Ilorin on Thursday.

The Commissioner, has also directed Area Commanders of the eight area commands, Divisional Police Officers, DPOs, and tactical teams in the state to embark on aggressive patrols of their respective areas.

The commissioner, advised members of the public to co-operate with policemen on stop and search duties and report any act of misconduct or extortion by the men of the command to the police commissioner through appropriate channels.

He equally asked members of the public to report strange happenings around their immediate environments to the nearest police station or through the following phone numbers-08125275046 or 07032069501.

Assayomo said the command has put in place series of security arrangements across the length and breadth of the state to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free celebration in Kwara state.

In a related development, the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has deployed 800 officers for the celebration.

A statement by its spokesman, Babawale Zaid Afolabi, in Ilorin on Friday, said officers would be deployed to some identified flash points, locations of various critical and national assets and other government properties.

"Officers and men from anti-vandal unit, counter terrorism unit, operation Harmony, armed squad and intelligence department among others, will be deployed to ensure a hitch-free celebration."

The statement warned those who intend to foment trouble or commit crime to desist as anybody caught will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
