Saraki UTME initiative: Sell your form, risk EFCC arrest

Date: 2012-02-24

The Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki Education Foundation (ABSEF) has threatened that it would report to the police and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) anyone caught selling the free Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTME) forms distributed by the senator.

Saraki, through the newly inaugurated Foundation on Tuesday, distributed 1, 225 free UTME forms to indigent students across the 16 local government areas of the state.

In a speech at the formal presentation of forms to beneficiaries in Ilorin, ABSEF committee chairman, Dr. Lasiele Yahaya of the University of Ilorin, said that the committee had put in place "several strategies" to ensure that the objective of the initiator was achieved.

"This opportunity offers a lot of advantages to the beneficiaries; apart from being a source of securing admissions into tertiary institutions, it is also an everlasting empowerment if properly utilised," he said.

"The pins (forms) to be provided free of charge should be used by the beneficiaries and not to be sold to any other person; anyone caught sabotaging this laudable programme will be reported to the police and EFCC," the university don warned.

In a remark, Speaker of the Kwara state House of Assembly, Barr. Rasaq Atunwa, described the gesture as "first of its kind among the legislators in the country."

He said that Senator Saraki had set a pace for other political office holders to follow.

Atunwa commended him "for his passion for Nigerian youths, who are future of tomorrow," and promised that the House would take a clue from the gesture.
