Four Shot, 15 Arrested as Hoodlums, Vigilante Clash
Four people, including two sons of Imam Gambari of Ilorin, Alhaji Hammed Saheed Dele, were allegedly shot Thursday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, following clashes between some youths and people suspected to be members of Vigilante groups in the town.
Already, the state Police Command had arrested 15 people in connection with the incident.
The incident, according to THISDAY checks, was as a result of the control of some important junctions within Ilorin metropolis, which was said to have been resisted by members of the Vigilante groups in the town.
It was also gathered that six commercial motorcycles were snatched from their owners, while plying the area during the incident.
THISDAY checks also revealed that the incident subsequently paralysed commercial and business activities in Ilorin metropolis as residents scampered for safety.
It was gathered that the Vigilante groups in the area had kicked against the activities of the youths, who were alleged to be collecting toll from people in some of the junctions before being allowed passage, which was kicked against by the Vigilantes in the town.
It was further learnt that the development, which started since Saturday had snowballed into serious crisis at Gambari junction in Ilorin, thereby leading to sporadic shooting between the two groups.
Sources close to one of the groups told journalists in Ilorin, that the injured people were admitted into one of the private hospitals in the town for medical attention.
The sources added that the crisis had spread to Baboko and Agaka areas of the town, with shops, stalls and other offices in the affected areas been shut down.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr.Femi Fabode, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who confirmed the incident, said the command had arrested 15 people in connection with the incident.
Fabode, who could not confirm the number of people allegedly shot or attacked during incident, said the police command was disturbed by the activities of youths suspected to be miscreants, who have been causing violence in Ilorin metropolis in the state.
The PPRO added that, the command would not close their eyes and watching people disturbing the peace of the state.
