Date: 2020-12-18

The Kwara State Police Commissioner, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday, assured residents of the state that the upcoming Christmas and New year will be celebrated peacefully without any breakdown of law and order.

In a press statement in Ilorin signed by the spokesman of the state police command, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, the commissioner, said" Robust crime prevention strategies have been placed throughout the length and breadth of the state.

"Constant raids of criminals hideouts, aggressive motorised, foot patrols and traffic decongestion strategies have also been placed for the festivities, considering the expected influx of visitors into the state during the period," the statement added.

The commissioner further warned of the second wave of COVID-19 infection as confirmed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

Asserting that the recent alarming spike of new cases calls for serious concern, Egbetokun advised the public to strictly stick to COVID-19 safety guidelines issued by the NCDC and the state government, including the compulsory wearing of face masks in public and keeping social distancing.

He warned that "The ban on the sale and use of low-level explosives like knockouts, bangers, and fireworks, is still in force."

The Police Commissioner cautioned parents and guardians not to buy the banned items for their children and wards as violators would be made to face the full weight of the law.

Egbetokun, further directed members of the public, to report all suspicious movements in their areas to the nearest police station.
