Nutritionist recommends milk for children, the aged

Date: 2012-10-21

The Nutrition Manager, WAMCO Plc, Mr. Amaka Okwesileze, has said that milk is not only meant for children but also for adults, including the aged. According to her, milk reduces loss of teeth in the aged, while its calcium content helps in making their bones strong.

She spoke at a milk consumption sensitisation programme in Ilorin recently.

The campaign, tagged, 'Drink milk every day,' was organised by the WAMCO Plc in collaboration with the office of the First Lady of Kwara State and the Leah Charity Foundation.

About 3,000 women benefited from the sensitisation programme.

The women, spread across the state, were taught the benefits derivable from daily milk consumption.

Also, Senior Brand Manager, WAMCO Plc, Mr. Joshua Abu, said milk was the cheapest source of protein and Vitamin E, adding that its many Nigerian children lack nutrients found in milk.

He said the sensitization programme had been held in three other states.

Wife of Kwara State Governor, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, said milk was one of the few staple drinks that contain large amount of beneficial health nutrients that nourish the body for the development and maintenance of healthy bones.

She disclosed that the LEAH Charity Foundation, through its health intervention desk, has been supplying baby formula to infants who lost their mothers at birth, and mothers who have difficulty lactating due to illness or diseases.

She said, "This is part of our resolve at ensuring that these children get enough milk to see them through infancy."
