Nigerian Universities' Graduates Can't Speak Good English - Prof Shehu Jimoh
A retired professor of Education Psychology, Shehu Jimoh has alarmed over the non-performance of Nigerian educational system stating that "Our educational system at all levels has not achieved the objectives for which they were set up."
The professor added that "Nigeria's education system has not changed radically from the type we inherited from the colonial era, rather it remains bookish with very minimal attention paid to the raining of the hands in addition to the training of the head."
Speaking in Ilorin while presenting a paper titled '50 years of university education in Nigeria: So Far, So What?', as parts of activities marking 50th anniversary of the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, alumni association, Kwara State, the lecturer called for outright revolution in the education sector.
According to him, "Standards are falling and today's university graduates cannot communicate effectively in English nor can he demonstrate any other skills and competence relevant to the world of work outside school.
"This situation is aggravated by the trend of examination malpractice which permeates all levels of our educational system. Thus, when you interact with somebody who claims to be a graduate, you begin to wonder if he actually earned a degree."
Jimoh, however, opined that there is no correlation between what the students learn (if you call that learning) and what they need to function effectively in their respective communities.
"There is a craze for certificates, mere paper qualifications without the concomitant skills and competences.
"While the number of universities and student enrolment are increasing rapidly, there are no corresponding quality-assurance measures put in place. This is why we turn out thousands of graduates every year without equipping them to find their way through the conceptual landscape of the knowledge-driven economy of the 21st century."
