The police in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday arraigned Mr. Yusuf Abdullahi, who allegedly impersonated a soldier, at an Ilorin Senior Magistrates’ Court.

Abdullahi, whose address was not provided, is charged with impersonation and stealing.

He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting Inspector Isaac Yakub told the court that the case was transferred from the 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi Cantonment, to the State Crime Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Ilorin.

He said on December 25 last year, the accused was arrested at 22 Brigade Medical Centre Junction, Sobi Cantonment Ilorin, during a stop and search.

He alleged that the defendant was caught with a military camouflage trousers and two military pullovers.

The prosecutor said investigation conducted at the SCIID showed that the accused claimed to be living (squatting) with Mr. Mustapha Haruna in Kaduna State.

Yakub said that the accused stole the aforementioned military accoutrements and absconded to Ilorin, where he used them as a soldier.

He said investigation was on to ascertain the defendant’s mission to Ilorin.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 179 and 287 of the Penal Code.

Senior Magistrate Mr. Muhammed Ndakene granted the defendant N50, 000 bail and two sureties in the like sum.

He said that the sureties must live within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case till January 23.
