Kwara Speakership: APC Stakeholders Want Moro LGA To Produce Speaker

Date: 2019-05-30

Concerned stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Moro local government area of Kwara state have asked other four component local government areas in the Kwara North senatorial district to concede the speakership position in the ninth state House of Assembly to them in the interest of fairness, equity and justice.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Thursday, APC stakeholders, led by their spokesperson, Saka Salawu, commended the leadership of the party in the state for approving that speakership slot of the state House of Assembly should go to Kwara North senatorial district.

The people, who hailed the decision of the state incoming governor, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and the state chairman of the party, Bashir Bolarinwa, on the matter, said that it was in the interest of justice.

They said that Kwara Central district and Kwara South district had achieved governorship and deputy governorship respectively in the current power arrangement and equation.

The people, who appealed to party elders and leaders of the party in Kwara North district, including all House members elect in the zone to concede the speakership post to them, said that the Moro local government area had for long been marginalised.

"Out of the five local government areas ie Baruten, Edu, Kaiama, Moro and Patigi, that make up the senatorial district, only Moro has never benefitted from its membership thereof in terms of elective and appointive positions since the return of democratic rule, 20 years ago, in 1999.

"Yet, Moro is undeniably an integral part of the Kwara North. Without Moro (in land mass and population) Kwara North cannot exist as a senatorial district. The Almighty Allah Who groups us in the zone has a purpose for the design but certainly cannot be one of punishment and poverty, one of oppression and marginalisation. We, therefore, take the view that the injustice we have suffered over the years in Kwara North is not a deliberate act of wickedness, prejudice or enmity on the part of the otherwise good people of the zone, rather a result of years of mis-governance by the past leaders.
