Gov. Ahmed inaugurates NMA House

Date: 2018-07-19

Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara on Tuesday commended the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on their ethical standard and efficiency in healthcare delivery, as he inaugurates NMA House in Ilorin, the state capital.

The inauguration was part of activities to mark the association's 2018 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference.

Ahmed, who was represented by Mrs Susan Oluwole, the Kwara Head of Service (HOS) described the theme of the conference: "Drug Abuse in Nigeria. Rolling Back Woes, Shame and Sorrow" as apt.

He said that the theme was timely, as the country was witnessing increased rate of drug abuse among the youths.

He added that the Nigerian Epidemiological Network (NENDU) had stated that of the patients who sought treatment for Opioids use, 69 per cent were using tramadol and 20 per cent were using codeine.

Ahmed said that the state government partnered law enforcement agencies and professional bodies to sensitise the public on effects of drug abuse.

He also disclosed that campaign against drug abuse was ongoing in schools in the 16 local government areas of the state to educate children on dangers associated with drugs.

Dr Kunle Olawepo, the Chairman of NMA, Kwara chapter, explained that the association would redoubled its efforts to push the fight against drug abuse.

He noted that as part of activities of the AGM and Scientific Conference, the NMA would carry out free medical outreach to Ipee community in Oyun Local Government area of the state.

According to him, there is no specific target of patients that will benefit from the outreach as surrounding communities will also benefit.

Olawepo added that the association would carry out free screening, dispense free drugs and surgical interventions to patients.

The NMA chairman said the Scientific Conference was expected to deliberate on issues affecting the health sector, NMA elections and Annual General Meeting.
