Ogoniland: Saraki Explains Delay In Execution Of UNEP Report
The chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Environment, Senator Bukola Saraki has explained the delay in the implementation of the report of environmental destruction of Ogoniland.
Saraki who spoke with newsmen in Ilorin, Kwara State yesterday, disclosed that there are structural issues in the report that must be addressed.
"One is the immediate response, like finding alternative provision of water and sanitation, which is being addressed by the state governments involved. Number two is the institutional issue like that of agencies which the UNEP said must be set up to ensure a level of funding by agencies involved to take care of restoration and clean-up", he said.
He also said that the National Assembly had been waiting for three different bills to support the setting up of agencies to take care of environmental issues in Ogoniland, adding that the effective setting up of projects in the areas would be difficult without the agencies, noting that Shell, for instance, would not put down about $1 billion without the agencies in place.
Saraki said that he had introduced a bill on the amendment of NESREA bill whch, when passed into law, would address some of the environmental issues in the country, like that of Ogoniland.
