Nigerian Senate orders 38 VCs over increase in tuition fees

Date: 2017-06-29

The Nigerian Senate is set to order 38 Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities to court over tuition fees hike.

On Tuesday, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Barau Jibrin, made this known.

Senator Jibrin said this in response to the statement credited to Deji Omole, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of the University of Ibadan, that 38 universities have had tuition fees hike because of the poor funding of the Federal Government.

Among the institutions involved are: University of Lagos, UNILAG, Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, University of Nigeria, UNN, Obafemi Awolwo University, OAU, Bayero University Kano, BUK, University of Abuja, Usman Danfodiyo University, UDUS, University of Ilorin and National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN.

The senator said that the VCs would be summoned when the Senate comes back from Sallah break next Tuesday to give an explanation on why they have increased their fees.

"There are abuses of IGR in almost all the Universities. Our preliminary investigations have shown that there is general abuse of IGR in our universities."

"We have beamed our searchlight on it. We will ensure proper utilisation of the IGR including tuition fees," he stated in an interview with Daily Trust.
